7 Warning Signs of Roof Leaks

One of the primary purposes of a roof is to protect its corresponding home from water damage. Unfortunately, leaks occur, and oftentimes, they go undetected.

So, you might be wondering: how do you identify roof leaks? And even more, when should you call Boise commercial roofing contractors? Generally speaking, if you notice one of these seven signs, a call to your local roofer is warranted.

1. There Are Water Spots on Your Ceiling

An almost sure sign that your roof is leaking is that there are water spots on your ceiling. These are brownish/yellowish spots that essentially stain drywall. They’re unsightly and sometimes give drywall a spongy consistency.

Over time, water damage can ruin drywall entirely. But even more severe is the negative effect that it has on a building’s structural components. When roof water seeps into the structural components of a building, it can cause them to become warped and misshapen; this can lead to a huge repair, one that will cost you substantial amounts of money.

As such, the second you notice water spots, you need to bring in a roofer for an inspection. The roofer will determine the source of the spots and then take action to repair that source.

2. Your Interior Walls Are Bubbling

Another sign that your roof has a leak is that your interior walls are bubbling. Bubbling occurs as a result of water exposure. If water works its way into the drywall, it will, indeed, start to bubble.

Of course, the water could be coming from some other entity. For instance, there could be a plumbing leak in your building. However, in most cases, this is indicative of a roof leak.

Note, wall bubbles generally take years to present themselves. So, if you’re seeing them, it means that water has been pouring into your building for quite some time now.

Don’t let this problem persist. Get a roofer in as soon as possible and get that leak patched up pronto.

3. Your Roof Is Dipping

You should be going up on your roof and checking it every few months to make sure that it’s still in relatively good shape. When doing so, there are a number of things to look out for. One of these things is dipping.

If there are small craters in any part of your roof, there’s a chance that a leak has sprung. This is particularly true if the craters are surrounded by rings of dirt.

Now, this is a fairly early sign of deterioration. It doesn’t mean that your building has already incurred water damage. However, it does mean that water damage is on the horizon.

Call up your local roofer and get the problem sorted sooner rather than later.

4. You Can See Sunlight Peeking Through Your Roof

Roof leaks are not always easy to see with the naked eye. You’re certainly not going to see them when it’s dark outside. However, if the sun is out, and you’re on the inside of the building, you just might be able to notice small tears.

All you have to do is look for spots where sunlight is peeking through. There’s no doubt: if sunlight is peeking through your roof, it has incurred tears of some extent. And if there are tears in your roof, water is undoubtedly making its way through them.

Don’t hesitate to make the fix. Call in your local roofing company and prevent all risk of water damage.

5. There’s Water Dripping from Your Ceiling

Sometimes, the signs of roof leakage stare you right in the face. If you see water dripping from the ceiling in your building, there is almost certainly a small leak in your roof (or large).

Yes, a burst pipe could cause this problem as well. However, if your roof leaks in heavy rain, specifically, it’s almost certainly your roof that’s to blame.

Unfortunately, if this is occurring, there’s a decent chance that water damage has already been done. So, not only are you going to need someone to repair your roof, but you’re also probably going to need someone to repair parts of your building.

Your local roofing company can handle the former task. You’ll have to call a home renovation specialist to handle the latter.

6. There’s Mold Growing in Your Building

Where water goes, mold soon follows. As such, if you’re finding mold in your building, there’s a high likelihood that water is seeping in through some sort of avenue. If the mold is toward the top of your building, in particular, the water is likely leaking in through the roof.

There’s only one way to fix this problem permanently. You’re going to have to have that leak repaired. Your local roofing company can help you with the job.

7. Your Energy Bills Have Gone Up

Your energy bills are directly affected by the quality of your roof. When your roof is intact, it provides terrific insulation, taking the strain off of your heater and air conditioner. The results in less energy usage and less money spent on energy bills.

But when there are tears in your roof, its insulative qualities lessen, and your heater and air conditioner end up having to use more energy than they would otherwise. This, of course, results in costlier energy bills.

So, if your energy bills have gone up lately, consider that your roof might be the culprit. And while you’re at it, keep an eye out for the other signs on this list.
